Common issues we find when reviewing farm insurance
Many Tasmanian farms are underinsured or sitting on outdated policies. When something goes wrong, the gaps only show up at claim time. When we review farm programs, some patterns appear again and again.
Sums insured that have not kept up with replacement costs
Sheds, fencing and machinery often insured for values that are years out of date.
Farm home and contents not correctly linked to the farm policy
Gaps between domestic and farm sections that can cause disputes.
Business interruption not included or set too low
Little or no protection for lost income after a major event such as fire, storm or machinery breakdown.
Incorrect activities disclosed
Side income such as farm stay accommodation, contracting or tourism experiences not declared.
Multiple policies with different insurers and renewal dates
Hard to manage, making it easy for renewals to roll over without review.
Key covers for Tasmanian farms and agribusiness

We create a comprehensive risk profile for insurers, which is especially relevant for workers compensation pricing and cover.2

Example: farm review mixed grazing and cropping in the Midlands
A family owned mixed grazing and cropping farm came to us with policies spread over two insurers. Sheds and machinery were insured for historic values and there was no business interruption cover in place. After a full review we updated building and machinery sums insured, included business interruption and consolidated key covers under one farm pack. The overall premium was slightly higher, but the client gained significantly better protection and clarity around what was insured.

Farm insurance FAQs
No. We work with hobby farms through to large agribusiness. The important part is that we understand what you do so we can match the right cover.
Yes. In many cases we can act as your broker with your current insurer and simply improve the structure and service, rather than changing insurers immediately.
Given the increase in building materials, machinery and labour costs, we recommend at least an annual review of major sums insured and a deeper review every few years or after major changes on farm.
We usually ask for your current farm schedule, a breakdown of activities and income streams, an overview of machinery and livestock, and details of any recent major claims. We can step through this with you on a call.
Yes. Farm stay, tours, cellar doors and other on farm income streams are common and need to be disclosed. We can structure cover so these activities are noted and insured correctly.
In Tasmania, workers compensation is mandatory if you employ anyone, including casual workers, seasonal staff, contractors and family members who are paid. Even if you only have one employee, you must have cover in place. We can help you understand your obligations and arrange appropriate cover.
Yes, if family members receive wages or salary for their work on the farm, they must be covered under your workers compensation policy. This applies even if they are shareholders or directors of a farming company. Unpaid family members generally do not require cover.
Contractors should have their own workers compensation insurance. However, you need to ensure they provide proof of cover before they start work. If a contractor does not have adequate insurance, you may be liable for their workers under your policy. We can help you understand your obligations when engaging contractors.
